Our Station

Work continues in the re-development of our Fulwell Community Fire Station from Fulwell to Marley Pots - read our latest press release for more information.

Opened on 7th April 1942 by the Mayor (Councillor, Myers Wayman) and then two weeks later received a direct hit from a high explosive bomb, Sunderland North Community Fire Station (formerly Fulwell Fire Station) is one of our older stations and is located on Station Road in the Fulwell area of the North of the City of Sunderland. It covers several Local Council Wards namely; Fulwell, St Peters, Southwick, Castle and Redhill.

The personnel are the main asset and, in addition to responding to emergencies, undertake a range of Community Safety (CS) activities that are primarily aimed at preventing fires and deaths and injuries in fires.

As well as the social club the station includes a small community room open to community groups as a venue for meetings and community events.

The Area

The geographical area served by Fulwell Community Fire Station spans relatively affluent residential to large pre/post war council estates, a large number of high rise residential and light and heavy industrial. It also includes Sunderland Football Club’s, Stadium of Light, Monkwearmouth Hospital, a substantial riverside risk, parts of Sunderland University and halls of residence.

The population, based on the 2001 Census, is 71,743 persons who are predominantly from Anglo-Saxon background (96.4%) with a combined ethnic group of (5.0%). There are 31,221 dwellings within the Station area with approximately: -

  • 66.1% Owner Occupied

  • 20.7% Local Authority Rented

  • 3.9% Privately Rented

  • 7.3% Housing Association Rented

Single parent families occupy 7.2% of dwellings, with 16.9 % single pensioner households.

Levels of unemployment across this area vary from 10.1% for males and 5.9% for females compared to the national average of 4.7% (2001 census). These figures reflect the wide variety of socio-economic groups residing within individual neighbourhoods, which can be linked to the risk of dwelling fires occurring within the area. This is illustrated in the map of the station area (the red indicates areas where the risk of having a dwelling fire is well above average, orange is above average, yellow is average, blue is below average and green is well below average).

Home Risk Assessment
Home Safety Checks

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service is committed to achieving it's Vision of 'Creating the Safest Community' by reducing the risk of fire in domestic premises through Home Safety Checks.

Firefighters can visit your home, where you may be at the greatest risk from fire, and offer simple advice on Fire Safety, tailored specifically to your needs. We can also, where necessary fit free smoke detectors, and in certain cases, provide a deep fat fryer to replace a conventional chip pan.

We are currently targeting our resources those households most at risk, but will attend to you as soon as possible if you request this service.

Residents Parking Permit Scheme

There have been problems in the past  with vehicles visiting the station grounds, along with issues regarding illegal parking and areas being blocked or affecting training to the rear yard. To alleviate these issues, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service have introduced new ‘traffic management’ measures in order to prevent such future occurrences whilst improving security to the existing residents.

The traffic management measures will briefly comprise the following:-

  • Automated barriers to both East and West access / exit roads
  • Permits (one per household) to activate barriers on arrival / departure
  • Display permits (one per household) for vehicle
  • Line markings / demarcation areas to the rear yard
  • New signage, indicating speed limit, residents parking and authorised access etc

This scheme has been introduced to prevent or deny access to those vehicles who casually use the site for parking, drop-offs and using the area as a ‘turning point’ for their vehicle. It is not intended to prevent access to those vehicles which are owned by existing local residents who have rights of access to the yard.

Access to existing authorised staff within TWFRS who carry an electronic pass card / permit will not be affected and can access the yard by placing their pass against the readers to the barriers as with other stations across the Service.

For further details on how the scheme has been implemented or for any other enquiries please contact the Estates Management Department at Service Headquarters on 0191 4441500.
