In 1999, following a request from the government, Mott MacDonald carried out a review of existing Fire & Rescue Service Control rooms and the service they provided. A report of the findings was published in April 2000 and in December 2002 a further review of the Fire & Rescue Service was undertaken by Sir George Bain.
Mott MacDonald updated their review in 2003 and the government published their White Paper “Our Fire & Rescue Service”. The FiReControl project was initiated by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (now Communities and Local Government) in early 2004 to start work on one of the recommendations which was to reduce the number of Fire & Rescue Service control rooms in England.
FiReControl is a Communities and Local Government (CLG) national project working to move from the existing system of 46 local control rooms in England into 9 new networked Regional Control Centres (RCC’s). Currently, the North East region is served by four fire and rescue service control rooms covering a population of approx 2.6 million people within Tyne and Wear, Northumberland, Durham and Darlington and Cleveland Fire and Rescue Services.
The new Regional Control Centre for the North East Region will be located at the Belmont Business Park in Durham and will be the first in the country to go live, in May 2011.
For further information on the North East regional control project, including photographs, latest developments and frequently asked questions please visit the regional website.
